Bernard Sargent Hoyt ‘49, D.O.

We recently learned of the passing of Bernard S. Hoyt, D.O. in July 2023 at the age of 97. He graduated from high school in 1942 and then enlisted in the Marine Corps just after his 17th birthday. Bernie spent his World War II years in the South Pacific theater including the Bougainville and other campaigns. He later trained as a B-25 navigator/bombardier.

After the war, Bernie attended Kenyon on the GI bill and joined DKE, graduating in 1949.  While at Kenyon, Bernie worked as head waiter at Pierce Hall and met his future wife, Jane Elizabeth Grossman. A year after his graduation, in 1950, they were married in Gambier.

Dr. Hoyt trained in osteopathic surgery and established his clinical practice within the Mercer Osteopathic Clinic, in Mercer, PA. His surgical practice was conducted at several western Pennsylvania area hospitals, and he was a founder of the Shenango Valley Medical Center. Dr. Hoyt dedicated much time in active participation in various professional societies and local service organizations including the Boy Scouts. He was an active, longtime member of the Church of the Epiphany. Shortly before his death, in May 2023, he was honored with the Outstanding Rotarian Award for his 71 years of service in Rotary.
