EDWARD MICHAEL MCCABE ‘86
Lambda Brother Michael McCabe passed away suddenly on September 12, 2024, at the age of 62, from Huntington's Disease. Michael spent his formative years in Dedham, MA and Princeton, NJ and graduated from The Canterbury School in New Milford, CT, where he was a standout athlete on an undefeated football team and the captain of the varsity lacrosse team.
Michael’s time at Kenyon was notable for the many and varied friendships he had, as well as his four years of extraordinary academic achievement. Following Kenyon, Michael's passion for the culinary arts led him to École de Cuisine La Varenne in Paris, where he earned his Grand Diplôme certificate. He embarked on a distinguished career as a chef in Boston, working at renowned restaurants. His culinary skills were also showcased during his time with the Kraft Group, where he prepared meals for the New England Patriots, a team he adored.
Michael married Liz Spangler and together they raised their two beloved sons, Oliver and Ben. Michael was deeply committed to his family, never missing a game, art show, or school performance. He also devoted countless hours to coaching Dedham Youth Lacrosse, sharing his love of the sport with his boys. His culinary talents shone brightly in his home kitchen, where he often cooked meals for friends and family, creating a space of comfort and joy.
Upon his diagnosis with Huntington's Disease in 2017, Michael faced the challenge with extraordinary courage and resilience. He became a dedicated advocate, speaking at Huntington's Disease conferences across the country to raise awareness and offer hope. His personal journey and insights were a beacon of strength for many and he was a passionate supporter of ongoing research and treatment. The celebration of Michael's life was held on September 28, at St. Paul's Church in Dedham, MA, with Lambda brothers Michael Bald ’80, JP Weaver ’82, Lex Sidon ’86, and Sam Adams ‘81 in attendance.
